Cosmopolis is the third album by Deckard (a.k.a. Beppe Massara
creator and artistic director of Cavo Fest underground festival of electronic
music and digital art) with whom the producer wanted to develop a new kind of
experimental music called Global Electronic, a sound which contains all musical
genres which have always inspired him, a sort of crossover of styles
exclusively reinterpreted through the use of samplers and digital and analogue
synthesizers. New wave, classical, post rock, noise, industrial, EBM, techno,
glitch and ambient electronic coexist like different souls within the same song
and on the entire production.
The ten instrumental tracks make up a concept album
that is satirical and critical at the same time against financial speculation
and capitalist distortion that subvert the democratic and political balance:
the whole of society trapped under the burden of unending debt, cannibalized by
the cynicism of generated profit of those who make money without working and
administered by inert governments, corrupt and subservient accomplices in the
global neoliberalism, becoming the object of a sound narration at the border
between present and future.
A present time marked by the absence of empathy, produced by computer terminals in which the fate of entire communities is decided at the touch of a button and a future built on anabolic cyber-capitalism grows, losing the boundaries of itself in the obese indefinability of the digital flux.

Sei tracce con altrettanti nomi di gas nobili: questa la struttura di “Noble Gases”, concept-album realizzato interamente da Giuseppe Massara, in arte Deckard (come il cacciatore di androidi di “Blade Runner”). L’alchimista elettronico in questione dimostra in questi brani le sue eccellenti doti di sound-designer, estrapolando dal suo arsenale tecnologico timbri robusti, ben delineati, corposi, soddisfacenti per l’orecchio. Si sentono bassi vibranti, lead ricchi di sfumature, tappeti cangianti. La componente ritmica è spesso in primo piano, i loop sono ossessivi, ma non c’è dance commerciale nella proposta di Deckard. Al contrario, le tre costanti di ogni singola traccia – armonia, melodia, ritmo – diventano ciascuna territorio a sé stante di ricerca e sperimentazione. Nel momento in cui i brani sembrano addolcirsi i suoni si trasformano improvvisamente in qualcosa di spigoloso, di tagliente, con rari accenni di rumorismo qua e là, mentre talvolta fa capolino persino un fruscio vinilico che offre il suo tocco “vintage”.
Il contributo dei tre ospiti presenti, Alberto Fiori al piano elettrico Wurlitzer, Francesco Guerri al violoncello e la cantante argentina Carolina Pintos, è francamente non decisivo: anche questi tre elementi diventano infatti creta nelle mani di Massara che con il suo sapiente lavoro di taglia-e-cuci ne plasma gli interventi, li piega al suo servizio, adattandoli a un progetto che ha evidentemente ben chiaro in mente. E nel disegno di Deckard la mente, la mano, la macchina diventano un solo strumento: il risultato di questa riuscita coesione di intenti e di sonorità è un album prodotto in modo sopraffino, ipnotico e avvolgente nelle sue trame tra ambient, accordi staccati e asciutti da house-music, drones presenti e ricercatezze lo-fi che fanno capolino a sorpresa. La durata dell’opera è di circa mezz’ora, ma più che il minutaggio conta il risultato, che per un lasso di tempo indefinito vi proietterà in un vero e proprio universo parallelo.
